The Spring Colloquium will follow the principles of our first, highly successful colloquium, enabling practitioners from the field to engage with renowned scholars on an issue of shared concern. The Spring colloquium features Dr. Jo-Ann Archibald, one of Canadas leading First Nations educators, and Dr. Graham Smith, formerly Pro Vice-Chancellor (Maori) of the University of Auckland, and the Chairman of the Council for the Tribal University-Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi. Dr. Smith is also known for his involvement in developing the Kaupapa Maori Schooling initiatives in New Zealand. Dr. Smith is currently a visiting Distinguished Professor at UBC in Indigenous Studies. The colloquium will consider where we currently are at with Aboriginal education in British Columbia and then will reflect on what may be learned from elsewhere, e.g. New Zealand. This colloquium is particularly appropriate for school principals who serve significant Aboriginal populations in their schools, district personnel responsible for Aboriginal education, and other key educational leaders in your district necessary to the process of improving the educational experiences of Aboriginal students, parents, and communities. We are limiting initial registration to district teams of
4 personnel only until March 1st. After March 1st we will
open registration to individuals. We have only 40 spaces available
for this colloquium, so, as was the case with the first colloquium,
early registration is extremely important.
Inquiries and communication regarding the colloquium may
be made by phone at 604-827-5350, or by e-mail to slcentre@interchange.ubc.ca.
Registration forms are available elsewhere on this web-site. /2003The inaugural School Leadership Centre Autumn colloquium:Colloquium details Alternative School Calendars: What Research and School Experiences Suggest.
This colloquium is targeted for districts wishing to understand the current scope of alternative calendars and the rationales which recommend them. We recommend sending a leadership team to this day long session which will focus on the most current research and recent BC practical experience on the use of flexible calendars in schools and districts. Participants will leave with improved understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various models as well as the experience of school and district leaders who are currently using flexible scheduling. The cost for the colloquium will include pre-colloquium reading,
colloquium materials, lunch, and nutrition breaks. As well,
to maximize learning, participants will be given opportunity
for on-line discussion following the colloquium.
