November Colloquium:
School Leadership and the Media
November 26, 2004.
Speaker: Dr. Michelle Stack
As its 4th colloquium, the Schools Leadership Centre at the
University of British Columbia, in conjunction with the BC
Student Voice, is taking on the importance of the media for
school leadership. This colloquium will provide participants
with a critical appraisal of the mainstream media and its
representations of students and schools. It will engage participants
in a series of sessions to develop skills for dealing with
the mainstream media and particularly for the processes needed
to develop in-school, student directed media. The technical
sessions will be offered by Media professionals who have worked
with successful school media programs.
Topics covered will include:
- How teachers understand diverse youth through the media.
- How to integrate media as part of building more inclusive
schools.
- How to talk about media influences in the lives of youth.
- How to create media in your school and what examples
exist of successful school media production programs.
We will also look at how to use the media to your advantage,
including:
- Why it is important to engage with the media and how
you do this, as students and as educators.
- How you access your local media to publicize events or
actions in your community.
- What skills you need for a successful media interview.
- How to pitch a story for your local media.
By the end of the day, participants will develop a media
plan for their schools, detailing where and how media production
can improve school life. As well, students and educators will
leave with new skills and increased knowledge about where
to access more information about media production for youth,
both in schools and beyond.
The cost of this workshop is $550 per school team of 5 (3
students, and 2 teachers/administrators). There are spaces
for 8 school teams. Should registration spaces remain available
on November 12th, smaller teams and individuals who have committed
to the Colloquium waitlist, will be invited. For more information,
